30 AI writing tells (and how to fix each one)

ChatGPT and Claude output follows patterns a careful reader catches in two sentences. Here's the list - and the human phrasing to swap in.

1
"It is important to note that…" / "值得注意的是"
Why it's a tell: nobody pre-announces importance when talking. Cut the phrase and just say the thing.
Fix: "Note that…" or drop it entirely.
2
The em dash addiction — everywhere — mid-sentence
Why it's a tell: humans use — sparingly; AI uses it as a pause crutch in almost every paragraph.
Fix: split into two sentences or use a comma.
3
"In today's fast-paced world…" / "随着…的发展"
Why it's a tell: an AI filler opening that adds zero information. Every AI draft starts somewhere near here.
Fix: start with the actual subject or a concrete scene.
4
"delve into" / "深入探讨"
Why it's a tell: a word humans almost never say aloud. AI loves it.
Fix: "look at", "dig into", or just do it.
5
The rule-of-three stacking: "X, Y, and Z" everywhere
Why it's a tell: AI writes every list in threes. Read any paragraph back and count them.
Fix: two items, or four, or one strong one.
6
"Furthermore… Moreover… Additionally…"
Why it's a tell: conveyor-belt transitions. Real writers rarely signpost like this.
Fix: start the next sentence with the subject. "Also" once in a while is fine.
7
"seamless" / "无缝"
Why it's a tell: overused tech buzzword meaning "it works".
Fix: describe what actually happens: "it works without extra setup".
8
"game-changer" / "颠覆"
Why it's a tell: hype with no evidence. AI reaches for it when it can't say what's actually different.
Fix: name the specific change.
9
"leverage" as a verb (for everything)
Why it's a tell: business-speak that means "use".
Fix: "use", "build on", "take advantage of".
10
"unlock" potential/value/growth
Why it's a tell: AI's favorite metaphor for anything good happening.
Fix: what opens up, concretely?
11
Fake precision: "a staggering 75% of experts agree"
Why it's a tell: no source, no survey, just a number for weight. Real writing cites or skips.
Fix: give the real source, or say "many teams find…" without inventing stats.
12
"It's not just X, it's Y" (the twist structure)
Why it's a tell: a rhetorical shape AI reuses constantly to sound profound.
Fix: make the point once, plainly.
13
Passive voice everywhere
Why it's a tell: "it was decided that…" hides who did what; AI defaults to it.
Fix: "we decided…" - say who.
14
Every paragraph ends with a summary flourish
Why it's a tell: "Ultimately, this matters because…" after every point.
Fix: let most paragraphs just end.
15
"In conclusion… / To summarize…"
Why it's a tell: essays end like this; people don't.
Fix: end with the last real point or a question.
16
"revolutionize" / "革命性"
Why it's a tell: reserved for actual revolutions.
Fix: "changed how we…", "made X faster".
17
"cutting-edge" / "前沿"
Why it's a tell: filler for "new".
Fix: say what's new about it.
18
"elevate" your X / "赋能" your Y
Why it's a tell: trendy verbs AI sprinkles for energy.
Fix: "improve", "raise", or the concrete result.
19
"foster a culture of…"
Why it's a tell: HR-speak AI imitates perfectly and emptily.
Fix: the actual behavior: "we give people time to…"
20
"empower" someone to…
Why it's a tell: buzzword meaning "help" or "let".
Fix: "let them…", "helps them…"
21
Mechanical rhythm: every sentence the same length
Why it's a tell: AI balances sentence length unconsciously. Short. Long. Short. Long.
Fix: break rhythm deliberately - one long clause, then a two-word sentence.
22
"navigate the landscape of…"
Why it's a tell: abstract metaphor for "deal with".
Fix: "deal with", "work through".
23
Closing that tells you to "dive in and explore"
Why it's a tell: empty call-to-action with no next step.
Fix: one specific next step, or nothing.
24
"Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned professional…"
Why it's a tell: covers-all-bases opening, zero targeting.
Fix: pick one reader and write to them.
25
Lecturing: "Remember, …" / "It's crucial to…"
Why it's a tell: AI writes like a teacher's pet.
Fix: state it flat, let the reader decide.
26
Absolute certainty: "will completely transform"
Why it's a tell: no hedge, no nuance. Humans hedge.
Fix: "should", "can", "probably", "in our case".
27
Synonym triples: "efficient, effective, and seamless"
Why it's a tell: three near-identical adjectives say nothing.
Fix: one precise word.
28
Vague size claims: "huge growth", "significant impact"
Why it's a tell: no numbers, no comparison.
Fix: "grew from 200 to 2,000 users", "cut load time by half".
29
No opinions, no edge, no self-doubt
Why it's a tell: AI is allergic to taking sides. Everything is balanced and safe.
Fix: say what you actually think, including what you're unsure about.
30
"In an era of… / 当下时代…"
Why it's a tell: grand, vague, cinematic opening. Humans start smaller.
Fix: start with a person, a number, or a specific moment.
Did we get all of them? No - AI keeps inventing new ones. That's the point.
