Amazon listing descriptions that sound AI-written

Updated 2026-09-20 · a working page, not a sales page

A listing description has one job: answer the question the buyer typed, in the first two lines, before the fold. Generated copy does the opposite. It opens with atmosphere, mentions the category twice, and buries the actual answer in paragraph four, which most buyers never reach.

Short answer

What buyers actually scan for

On mobile, a description is read in about four seconds of thumb-scrolling between the photos and the reviews. That window is spent looking for the one detail that decides the purchase: will it fit, will it work with what I already own, how long until it arrives.

Write for that window. The opening should be the answer, not the mood. Anyone who needs more detail will keep reading; anyone who needed the answer has already stopped.

The generated-copy tells in listings

Four of them show up in almost every AI-written listing description:

  • The category restated as if it were a benefit: 'This high-quality kitchen storage solution...'
  • A triple stack of nouns that mean the same thing: durable, sturdy, long-lasting.
  • Scene-setting before specification: 'Imagine your morning routine...'
  • A closing paragraph about how the product makes life better, which no buyer reads.
  • None of these are grammar problems. They are ordering problems, which is why they are cheap to fix.

    A fifteen-minute rewrite pass

Start by writing the answer in your own words as a single sentence, as if replying to one buyer who asked. That sentence becomes the first line. Everything before it was throat-clearing; delete it.

Then read the listing and strike every sentence that is also true of a competing product. If a sentence survives that test, keep it and move it higher. What remains is usually about compatibility, sizing and what is in the box, the material buyers actually need.

Last, add the limits. What size it does not fit, what is not included, what takes longer than people expect. Written plainly, these reduce returns and read more trustworthy than any adjective would.

What this page will not do. It will not get a listing approved that breaks a platform rule, and it will not make a product fit where it does not. If the honest answer is that the item is unsuitable for a common use, saying so in the listing is the version that saves you the return.

    Questions

Should the description repeat keywords from the title?

Only where a human would naturally say it. Repetition that exists for the algorithm is the thing readers notice first.

How long should an Amazon description be?

As long as it takes to answer fit, contents and limits, usually 120 to 200 words. Length beyond that does not get read.

Can I write bullet points before the description?

Yes, and they are usually read more than the description. The same ordering rule applies: the answer goes first.
