Making AI text sound like you wrote it

Updated 2026-09-20 · a working page, not a sales page

Generic text reads as generated because it has no habits in it. Your habits are already written down — in your sent mail, your old posts, your messages. Copy four of them and the text starts sounding like you.

Short answer

Finding your own patterns

Read three things you wrote and liked. Count: how many words before your first full stop, whether you use contractions, whether you start sentences with 'And' or 'But', what you call the reader, how you end. Most people have four or five stable habits they have never noticed.

Those habits are the whole voice. Adopting someone else's produces pastiche; keeping your own keeps the text yours even when a model did the rewriting.

Turning patterns into instructions

Vague instructions fail: 'write in my voice' means nothing to a model. Specific instructions work: 'sentences average twelve words, one in five is under six words, no adverbs, second person, no exclamation marks, ends on a flat statement'. Constraints are checkable, and checkable instructions change output.

Rewrite over generate

Generating from a blank page always drifts toward the average. Editing your own draft keeps your structure, your facts and your emphasis, and only replaces the surface. If you have nothing to edit, write six bullet points first — that is enough of a spine to hold a draft.

What this page will not do. It cannot create a voice you have not written in yet, and it will not help if your reference text is itself generated. Start from something a person wrote without a model in the room.

If you want this done to your own draft: ShipCopy takes a piece of text you already wrote and rewrites it in one of three modes — rewrite it to read human, turn a product description into launch copy, or turn a plain-language request into a reusable prompt. Questions

How much of my writing do I need as reference?

Around 500 words in the same kind of writing. Less than that and the model regresses to the average.

Does this work in languages other than English?

Yes, if the reference text is in that language. Patterns do not transfer across languages.

Will the result be worse than my own writing?

Usually about the same, and faster. The reason to do it is volume, not quality.
